Centro Presente is proud to operate an Adult Education Program known as Education for Empowerment (EFE) - a unique initiative that each year provides English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish Basic Literacy, Spanish as a Second Language, US History and Civics Citizenship and Computer Literacy classes. Centro also offers a fun class for those who want to learn Spanish as a Second Language!
(1) English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) - Centro Presente offers four cycles of ESOL classes a year. Each cycle takes place during nine weeks at three different levels (basic, intermediate, and advanced.) Classes take place at the organization’s headquarters near Union Square in Somerville; in a nurturing and culturally appropriate environment that welcomes the students and helps them realize their potential.
(2) Spanish as a Second language - Learn Spanish at Centro Presente! This class is for you if… … you work at a community or human services organization and have been wanting to learn Spanish in order to better serve your population …you are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country and want to gain or improve your Spanish skills and learn about Latin American history and culture …you have been wanting to learn to speak Spanish or build upon skills you gained years ago …you want to support a dynamic, vital Latino immigrant organization that is working for economic and social justice!
(3) Computer Literacy classes not only provide access to computer equipment, instruction and the Internet, but more importantly, they motivate Latinos to use computers, pursue computer-related careers and take full advantage of information technology resources. Centro Presente offers basic computer literacy classes in Spanish on Saturdays. Students attending the classes learn the basic functioning of a personal computer along with word processing and Internet use. Classes are offered in four cycles of nine weeks.
(4) Introductory and Conversational Spanish - Spanish basic literacy at Centro is a class that helps students become literate in Spanish while acquiring the necessary skills to move forward towards learning English for the first time. Our course is a nine-month program taught at two levels, basic and advanced. We encourage all students who graduate from the basic level of Spanish literacy to continue with the advanced level.
(5) Citizenship - Centro Presente offers a three-month long Citizenship course three times a year. Our program provides US civics and history classes to prepare immigrants to take that important final step in our road as immigrants: US naturalized citizenship. As English proficiency is a requirement for the US naturalization test, we teach our citizenship courses in English.
