Boston, MA. — Community Organizations will hold a press conference about the Temporary Protected Status for Salvadorans to inform the immigrant community about this important process. The Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced yesterday the extension of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible nationals of El Salvador for an additional 18 months, beginning March 10, 2012, and ending Sept. 9, 2013.
Community Organizations encourage current Salvadoran TPS beneficiaries to register as soon as possible within the 60-day re-registration period. The 60-day re-registration period runs from January 9, 2012 through March 12, 2012.
The 18-month extension also allows TPS re-registrants to apply for a new Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Eligible Salvadoran TPS beneficiaries who re-register on time will receive a new EAD with an expiration date of Sept. 9, 2013.
“We are very pleased that the US government has renewed the TPS for Salvadorans,” stated Patricia Montes, Executive Director of Centro Presente, “We hope there will be a time when these types of programs will not be necessary because we will have a functional immigration system and an El Salvador that provides economic opportunities for all its people.”
