BACKGROUND
The Student Immigrant Movement (SIM) and its allies will hold a press conference and deliver to members of the Conference Committee over 1,000 signatures in opposition to the anti-immigrant amendments to the State Budget. Members of SIM have been maintaining a 24-hour vigil on the steps of the State House which enters its 15th day on Monday, June 21. During the vigil passers-bye have signed a petition strongly rejecting the undemocratic use of the State Budget process to pass anti-immigrant legislation.
“We call on our Representatives in the House not to pit working families against each other for political expedience, and we call on Governor Patrick to continue his support of the immigrant community,” said Jose Palma, Lead Organizer of SIM.
“We strongly condemn the anti-immigrant amendments that the Massachusetts Senate added to the State Budget. These measures are not solutions and they do not address the root causes of immigration,” declared Patricia Montes, Executive Director of Centro Presente and a board member of the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC).
