ACADEMIC TUTORING PROGRAM

PNM's Academic Tutoring Program was launched in the summer of 2007 as a response to the many young PNM participants
who at that time were falling behind in school, and also graduating high school without avenues to pursue higher education opportunities. Although we focus on helping young people hone their abilities and succeed academically, our program builds healthy mentorship opportunities through which we can instill hope and demonstrate to young people that their lives our valuable.

Currently, our Academic Tutoring Program works closely with student volunteers from Tufts University to provide
tutoring/mentoring sessions that are tailored to the needs of the young person. The program runs Monday through
Thursday from 3pm to 6pm, throughout the academic school year, and offers the following opportunities:

Individualized One-on-One academic support/mentoring

Members of the Academic Tutoring Program have the option of signing up for a tutor. Tutors are matched up with young people at our ATP orientation dinner held during the month of September, where both groups come together to:

1.) engage in an analysis on the struggles that students face in local public schools
2.) participate in teambuilding activities
3.) learn about the program's guidelines and expectations

Tutors are also matched up with students based on the tutor's academic strengths and the student's needs. Once a match is made, students will receive support from the same tutor throughout the entire academic year, and for a minimum of 2 hours each week. Students who come for support on days that they are not scheduled to meet with their specific tutor, can also obtain support from other tutors.

College application support

Given that many of our members come from families whose parents never attended college, our program aims to provide support for young people who are currently in the process of applying to college. We work with young people on all levels of the application process including:

1.) examining/evaluating high school preparation
2.) searching for the right school
3.) basic SAT prep
4.) writing the college application essay
5.) filling out college applications
6.) completing the FAFSA and scholarship applications
7.) preparing for college life

Academic Success Seminars

PNM offers "Academic Success Seminars" each semester in an effort to address common struggles. Seminars are short workshops that are organized by PNM staff for young people, and in some instances for their parents. Topics that we have addressed in the past include:

1.) Applying to college
2.) How to write an effective essay
3.) Finding financial aid for college

College Tours

PNM conduct tours to local colleges in order for students to become exposed to and learn more about higher education opportunities nearby. Tours are scheduled year round and are open to any student.

Recognition Dinners

Our program offers two recognition dinners each academic year, one in December and one in June, to recognize any achievements that our members have made. At the dinners, members have an opportunity to talk about their experiences in the program and evaluate their growth. We recognize academic achievements, as well as personal achievements.
